Placemark Investments Acknowledges Data Breach

Placemark Investments recently began notifying an undisclosed number of clients that their personal information may have been exposed when one of its servers was breached.
In early April of 2014, Placemark discovered that malware had been planted on one of its servers, causing it to send out large batches of spam. "Based on a comprehensive analysis, we believe that this unauthorized access of the server had at least the potential to expose certain PDF documents tied to account creation that were stored on the server for short intervals," company president Richard K. Dion wrote in the notification letter [PDF].
Those documents may have contained information relating to the affected clients' accounts, including names, addresses, birthdates and Social Security numbers.
